How is Salvia Addiction Treated?

Although the existance of an addiction syndrome to salvia is still being determined, there are treatments available for salvia abuse.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, “Salvia divinorum is a perennial herb in the mint family that is abused for its hallucinogenic effects.” However, the drug is not currently regulated under the Controlled Substances Act, so many people also abuse it for this reason. Treatment options do exist for salvia abuse, but generally, not enough is known about the drug to be certain whether or not it causes addiction.

Is Salvia Addiction Real?

Many people abuse salvia, but few have, as of yet, found themselves to exhibit symptoms akin to addiction. As stated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens, “More studies are needed to learn whether it has addictive properties.” However, this does not mean individuals who use salvia consistently are immune to addiction, as there is currently no way to be certain of whether or not the drug can cause this issue.

Salvia causes “intense but short-lived” effects, which can add legitimacy to the possibility of a salvia addiction syndrome. Drugs like crack cause individuals to use them over and over to maintain their short-lived high, and this is what makes them extremely addictive. Currently, though, one must take stock of their behavior concerning salvia, consider whether or not it is dangerous, and ask themselves if their drug abuse has become compulsive. If these issues have begun to occur, addiction is a likely possibility, but more than anything else, the individual will require treatment.

How is Salvia Abuse Treated?

Salvia Addiction

Behavioral therapy is beneficial for those who abuse salvia.

Since it is still not clear whether salvia causes a serious addiction syndrome or not, there is also no specific treatment program for the drug’s effects, in the way there are for drugs like heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, etc. Still, there are some important steps that will likely be taken if you go to a rehab center for the treatment of dangerous salvia abuse.

  • The doctor will perform a series of tests to find out whether or not you are experiencing other issues as a result of your drug abuse, what drugs are currently in your system, and what health issues you may have. In addition, you will often be asked about your drug abuse and any other substance you currently use.

You will undergo withdrawal from any substances you are dependent on, being treated with medication when necessary.

  • You will receive behavioral therapy that will help you learn to cope with the issues that might have led to your drug abuse as well as learn better, safer behaviors for the future when the possibility of drug abuse presents itself.
  • In many cases, someone who struggles with a drug like salvia and their consistent use of it is likely taking another drug as well, and both possible addiction syndromes must be treated at the same time in order for the person to recover.
